Spain is a fantastic country, brimming with life, music, art and culture – I think it’s a must see country for any backpacker or traveller to Europe. If you’re an active backpacker like myself, you’ll have an amazing time in Spain. There are so many various places to see in Spain that active backpackers should pay a visit, from Barcelona to Madrid to San Sebastian – they are all so DIFFERENT yet still mesmerizing in their differences and the varieties of options and cultures they offer.

Barcelona
This city often likes to refer to itself as independent, and not actually attached to ‘Spain’. Their fierce need for independence is always a topic of hot conversation, and passions always run high whenever their is a football game between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Walk the Gothic Quarter, investigate La Barceloneta and the beach and enjoy partying in the grand city of Barcelona.
Madrid
The capital of Spain, Madrid is not on the coast – but it still offers an amazing atmosphere for partying and relaxing. With huge green parks close to the city, and hundreds of fantastic restaurants – it’s not hard to have a good time in Madrid. Check out the Golden Art Triangle (three high quality art museums close together), and soak up the history this city has to offer.
San Sebastian
Often seen as a hot spot for the rich and famous, San Sebastian also caters for those that might not necessarily be rich or famous. It’s a superb little hideaway in the Basque region of Spain, and offers delectable tapas-like food known as Pinxtos (delicious!) and a break taking bay and beach for swimming and sun baking during the summer months.
There are many students here, and there is a penchant for partying, drinking and eating that you will find hard to beat in any other city. San Sebastian is definitely a favorite of mine!
As you can see, Spain offers and caters to almost every type of traveller and backpacker – it’s a wondrous place to visit and if you’re an avid backpacker like me you will love Spain. I thoroughly enjoy visiting regularly when I’m in Europe. If you’re wondering how much it costs to travel Europe, read this post for more information on some average costs.
